Post 4B: Analysis of music videos

Richard's analysis:

For this post i am going to analyse 2 music videos. 1 video which uses the conventions of a music video, and another which doesn't really use the conventions of a music video.

the first music video i will analyse is David Guetta ft Taio Cruz- Little bad girl. I think that this song does use of the music conventions of a music video.

This is a print screen shot from the video. i have captured this picture as i represents what the song is about 'little bag girl'. It is about 0.44 seconds into the song. Both Taio Cruz and David Guetta's songs are quite clubby and have a really good beat to them. Its the type of music you would definitely hear in a club.

Within the first 15 seconds there are 10 different camera shots, most in a different location, apart from the last two. The video doesn't use green screening but it has a lot of colour grading in it.

I have chosen to use this video for my research to help me with the techniques that is uses and what i can use for my video. It would be help if i was to learn these techniques and produce them in my own work to achieve maximum marks possible and so my music video isn't boring for my audience and so the video isn't just the camera sat in a still place for the whole video. In this music video, the whole video practically uses colour grading, which is what i have shown in the pictures above. We would probably expect this from the video as with all the different lights used in the club, colour grading will help sharpen the picture and make the video more visually attractive, so it will get more of an audience.
in my opinion i think  that this video would appeal to the audicen of David Guetta and Taio Cruz because the video relates to the song as they both work well together, and considering most people are out in clubs nowa days they like listening to a good club tune and i feel this video demonstrates this.

the second music video i have chosen to analyse is- Taylor Swift 'The best day' This song doesn't use the conventions of a music video.

This is a screen shot from the video "the best day' i have captured this picture because the little girl in the picture is taylor swift! but from when she was younger. we usually don't see this in music video's so this doesn't use all the music conventions.

within the first 15 seconds the video uses 1 camera shot and the camera is handheld! this is very unusual for a music video and it doesn't apply the correct music conventions.

i have chosen to use this music video as part of my research so i can show my audience that some music videos in the world today don't actually use all the music conventions, e.g colour grading, green screening etc. this video shows us Taylor swift as a young child. these videos were taken during her chid hood and she has decided to use them in one of her music videos.

  1. Richard - you pick out some of the key elements in each video but don't work through the Goodwin elements to show clearly how they conform or differ and could do with adding some of this in e.g. edits to the beat, reflects lyrics in visuals... The point of music videos is that they don't have a set list of conventions, they are very fluid - any rule exists to be broken.Possibly try and show in your comments that there is a rich variety of ways music videos can be made but try to identify some of the elements that they have in common...
