Production- Ancillary tasks, Digi pacl

For the name of the artist we like the idea of the name 'King'. This is a loose intertextual reference to the 80's artist Prince. Because this is an indie genre, and most indie artists have short names, we feel this is an appropriate name.
Similarly, because most albums, regardless of the genre,  have the mian song which would be sold sepparatly as a single as the main album name, we feel that the best option for the 'album name'  would be 'If You Ever Come Back'

Here are a few font ideas that we are considering for  use for the text on the Digi pack panels.

This font is named Universal College Draft

This font is named Old Typography

This font is called [ank]*

This font is called Fragment Core

This font is called Levi brush
This font is called Sweetly Broken

Production update

Here are some more screen shots of the music video editing process.  At this stage the whole video is edited together, all of the Green screen has been edited out using the chroma keyer tool and colour correction has been used on all of the video shots to enhance the look of the video.

Also a few other tools have been used to change the look of the video. Filters such as 'Vintage' which ads a slight diffused look found the frame of the shot, 'Flop', which flips the image round and video transitions such as a wipe effect have been used.
Here are some more screen shots to show the progress.

Planning- Storyboards

Below are scanned images of the storyboards that i drew. We decided that instead of planning a whole music video shot by shot, we would simply shoot the whole song several times from different angles and then decide how to edit them together once we had uploaded them to the Mac computers.

Planning: Risk Assesment

Here is our Risk Assessment forms for shooting in the college Media Suite and on location at my house (Charlotte)

Production- Ancillary Task 1.

Below are some sketches that i have drawn with ideas of how we could have the front cover, back cover and the inside pages of our digi pack looking. We intend to edit all of the images on photoshop so they look as if they have been hand drawn. This look will either be applied to all of the image, or either the background or the artist.

\

Front Cover
This is a simplistic idea, and is similar to that of Ed Sheerans newst album, +. We will take a close up shot of Richards face then photoshop this so it has a sketched apperance and put this image on a colourd background with faded edges.
Ed Sheerans Album, +

Back Cover
This will be a long shot  of Richard standing against the corner or a buildings wall with either an alley or a street in view for the other half of the shots frame. This will not only look good visually, but it will also frame the back cover of the digi pack so that the track list can be displayed down the other half of the image.

Indide cover one
This image will be taken in a back alley in Clitheroe near to my house. I chose this location because it looks remote and lonley enough to fit in with the indie genre. I chose that perticular camera angle also becuase it adds to the isolated feel as there is quite allot of background visible and the location itself looks lonley.

Inside cover two
This shot will also be taken close to my house on a wooden bridge that crosses over the train line. I think that this will be a great image because with the landscape visible, the train tracks and the hills, this will once again represent the lonlyness and the isolation associated with the Indie genre. Aslo the traintracks will fit with the lyrics of our music video nicely and this could also be used for a front cover.

Inside cover three
This shot will be in Clitheroe castle grounds. this location will work well because it is a wide open space and at this time of year will look especially empty as there will be no leaves on the trees. The pose that Richard will be standing in here will reflect the lonliness, isolation and desparation that our artist is feeling as this album will be a concept album. The concept being disress after a break up.

Inside cover four
This shot will be taken in the walk/ subway underneath Clitheroe interchange. This shot will represent a more urban concept of lonliness. As the links to bigger places with more people are avaliable (the train) and the people that come off the train will be around, yet knowing that you are still alone. The same idea of being in a room full of people and still feeling alone.

The only set-back we may have with taking these pictures is that Richard will not be in the shot at the time of taking the picture. Because of his job, we will have to photoshop him onto the image at a later time and take pictures of him sepparatly. This may not create a fantastic looking image, but we will have to use our technical abilities to create a close enough edit so that it is not obvious streigh away.

Production

Here are a few shots of us showing our technical abilities by using the Chroma keyer tool and colour correction whilst editing out the green-screen. week beginning 28/11/11 through till week ending 9/12/11

Production: Post two- 14th-18th Nov

Here is our first rough edit. we have put all of our shots in order and have begun to greene screen and use colour correction

Tuesday, 15 November 2011

Production: Post one. Nov 7th-11th

This week we shot some footage in the college media suite and we used the green screen. this will be edited out when we have decided what our backdrop will be. We also shot footage on location inside my (Charlottes) house. in total this week we have gained around 40 minutes of footage for us to use and edit. Next week, Starting monday 14th November we hope to get the rest of our shots from outside in Brungerley park, Clitheroe

We also uploaded the green screen footage onto the college Mac computers and we will be uploading the inside shots in Tuesdays lesson. With the green screen shots, we have started to edit them onto a timeline in final cut express.

Changes to our plans

Because Jay was unwell on the day we had planned to do the studio shots, Richard stepped in and instead f Jay being or artist,  Richard has now filled in the spot.

Planning Post 4: Various lists.

Here is a list of all the various props, costumes, casting shots and location shots that we intend to use.

As we are trying to keep things minimal in order to create a lonely feel, as the song to some degree is mourning the loss of a loved one, therefore our props will be minimal also. We will be using Jay's guitar (our performers own instrument) as a main prop. Other props will come in with the locations as i am hoping to get shots of Jay performing on rocky areas, therefore the landscape will be the prop.
Also, we are hoping to do internal shooting, so personal items that you would expect a couple to have will be place in order to crate a sense of verisimilitude.  Things like photographs, clothing and other personal items will be in shot to re-create a sense of realism. These internal shots will be used for flashback scenes.

In terms of costume, our performers will wear gender stereotypical clothing for the Indie/ Pop genre.
For shannon, se will be wearing a dress, tights, boots with over knee socks,  cardigan, coat and scarf. this layering effect will keep her warm, whilst still reflecting the genre well.
Her hair will be done so that it looks to be simple and easy, though there will be style behind it. most probably a half up half down hairstyle.
Here is an image from google that is similar to the outfit i have in mind for her to wear:

Here this model is wearing a long coat with a woolen scarf and boots. This is fairly similar to how i imagine Shannon to dress for the shoot.

For our male artist/ performer, Jay, His costume will be of stereotypical male indie wear.
Boots or old converse, ripped jeans, long coat or jacket unzipped with a gingham shirt and either a band T-shirt or a plain shirt with a large print in the middle. Here is another image from google similar to what i imagined:

Although this particular image is not exactly winter clothing, this can simply be solved by adding gloves, coat, scarf and possibly a hat.

Planing Post 3: Equipment

Here is the list of the equipment we will need in order to produce our finished product:
Camera - To film
Lighting- |To produce a good quality image
Mac computers- So we can access Final Cut Express
Final Cut Express- To edit the footage and use other tools avaliable within the program
Photoshop- To edit photos to make them look professional enough for our ancillary task
InDesign- To create a professional looking final ancillary task.

Planning: Post 2

This is a lyrics video from The Script- If you ever come back.

This is the official video, The Script- If you ever come back.

we will be using the lyrics and the tempo to help with our editing. we will do this take taking some of the lyrics literally and using the pace/beat of the music to edit the footage together.

This is the written lyrics which i will annotate to show the verses/chorus and sound bridges.

Verse 1: If you're standing with your suitcase
But you can't step on the train
Everything's the way that you left it
I still haven't slept yet

And if you're covering your face now
But you just can't hide the pain
Still setting two plates on the counter but eating without you

If the truth is you're a liar
Then just say that you're okay
I'm sleeping on your side of the bed
Goin' out of my head now

And if you're out there trying to move on
But something pulls you back again
I'm sitting here trying to persuade you like you're in the same room

And I wish you could give me the cold shoulder
And I wish you could still give me a hard time
And I wish I could still wish it was over
But even if wishing is a waste of time
Even if I never cross your mind

Chorus: I'll leave the door on the latch
If you ever come back, if you ever come back
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back
There'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on
And it will be just like you were never gone
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back if you ever come back now
Oh if you ever come back if you ever come back

Verse 2: Now they say I'm wasting my time
'Cause you're never comin' home
But they used to say the world was flat
But how wrong was that now?

And by leavin' my door open
I'm riskin' everything I own
There's nothing I can lose in a break-in that you haven't taken

And I wish you could give me the cold shoulder
And I wish you can still give me a hard time
And I wish I could still wish it was over
But even if wishing is a waste of time
Even if I never cross your mind

Chorus: I'll leave the door on the latch
If you ever come back, if you ever come back
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back
There'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on
And it will be just like you were never gone
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back, if you ever come back now
Oh, if you ever come back, if you ever come back

Verse 3: If it's the fighting you remember or the little things you miss
I know you're out there somewhere so just remember this
If it's the fighting you remember or the little things you miss
Oh just remember this, oh just remember this

Chorus: I'll leave the door on the latch
If you ever come back, if you ever come back
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back
There'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on
And it will be just like you were never gone
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back, if you ever come back now
Oh, if you ever come back, if you ever come back

And it will be just like you were never gone
And it will be just like you were never gone
And it will be just like you were never gone
If you ever come back, if you ever come back now.

Planning : Post One

The brief idea for our music video is that we will shoot a narrative video with a story line of our artists looking for his girlfriend who has left him. This will involve shots of our performer wandering through woods, streets and public areas such as a train or bus stations looking for her, but not finding her at al. I also had the idea for the end of the music video for a shot a house door with either a knock or a doorbell ring and just a letter with the words 'Sorry' written on them for a book end to the music video.  Also at the start  of the music video, a letter is found by our performer with a break-up apology written on it. This would be a good way to book end the music video.

For the performance part, shots of our artist in the colleges media suite playing guitar singing into the camera. Some shots of just playing. Some shots of just singing, and some combined.
The main characters that will be in this video is our artist/ performer, Jay Atherton. Our female extra will be played by Shannon Hamnnett. The overall feel of the video will be quite lonely and isolated so the use of only a few people will create this effectively
Shannon Hamnnett
Jay Atherton

Another good way to create this isolated feeling would be to do a shoot in an empty hall with our performer on stage singing alone.

Because of the time of year we are filming in, i hope to use some woodland areas to also recreate the feeling of loneliness. By using forest areas this will also create a feeling of isolation. I am hoping to use Brungerly Park in Clitheroe. here is a photograph from google of the park during mid winter covered in now. this would be my ideal set location with snow, but it is looking unlikely that by Monday it will have snowed, therefor a simple dead wood will also effectively create an empty look.

I am hoping to shoot as much footage possible in one day and because we have the first slot on Monday for green-screen shooting, we can go back to Clitheroe and get footage from hopefully Brungerley. Because we have an early slot for shooting, if we do not get enough footage, we will still have plenty of time to get extra if we need it.

Planning : Introduction Post.

Now that our research is done, we are abel to move onto planning our video shoot. We will be shooting in the colleges media suit on Monday 7th November in order to get footage that we can later use for green screen for the first half of the day. For the second half of the day we will hopefully collect some footage shot outside, though I am currently unsure of were these locations will be.
It is important that we plan out everything possible for the video shoot so when it comes to shooting the footage, we know exactly what w want  and how we want it too look. this will save time and enable us to have plenty of footage and enough time to edit everything together.

post 20- Final cut training task

here are both of our preliminary tasks for editing training on final cut.

Here is Richard's editing preliminary task:

Charlottes preliminary training task on Final Cut.

Here is Our combined task on chroma keyer change:

Post 19: The institution that would accept our product

Both me and Charlotte feel that our product would best suit with a Major record label. This is because other examples such as The Fray, who are signed to Epic record label which is a major, have had success with their music and done better because they are signed to a major. We have considered going independent as the artist tend to do well just like those who are signed to majors, but we just feel that our artist/product can achieve more if signed to a major record label.

Post 18: Branding reflected in our product

Through our research into branding we have discovered that we will need to create a whole image for our artist to 'step into' as if we were going to actually market our final product to a record label. It is important for us to create a brand image so that our potential audience can easily identify our artist from others by becoming familiar with certain aspects of our artists image. For example. Beyonce is known for her legs and hair, therefore these are key aspects in her music videos, posters and most of the time on her Album cases.
We will need to keep simple things like this in mind for when we come to creating our Ancillary tasks so we can create a genuine looking product that a potential audience could buy into.

Post 17: Analysed examples of branding.

What is branding?
Branding is the way in which an artist creates their own image and then has a style that they are known for. Branding applys to our product as we will have to re-create The Scripts' band brand image, but with a difference, instead of recreating their image with a band, we are re-creating it with a solo artist.

Example! presentation
This is my branding presentation (Richard) which investigates into how record labels brand their artists to help sell the music. I chose to do the artist "Example" because i love his music and it was interesting for me.

Investigation Into Branding- Charlotte Perkins

Post 16- What is branding?

In order for artist to sell their products, they first need to brand it. Branding requires creating an image for the fans of artist to buy into. Such as, the artist Example. For him to sell his product he use's posters, albums covers, internet adverts and tv adverts. To do each of these he always has a picture of him self on the cover with his artist name 'Example' in bold. He uses strong colours and any writing is in bold for the audience to see, and immediately be attracted and buy his music.
Branding matters because without it, your product wont be able to sell. And it also matters to the audience so they can identify the artist easily.

Post 15: Audience response

Through our questionnaire, we have descoverd that our audience is typical of what we expected. Most of our audince who took part in our questionnaire favoured the Pop and Indie genres over the others, which is what we hoped for. Also, most of the voted for Indie and Pop cmae from females which is also what we predicted.
The age of our main audience is also reflected as ages 15- 23 whic is also what we predicted and hoped for. this shows that Indie/ Pop muic is mainly a young trend threfore we will use technology to market to our audeicne.
Our audience trends towards not buying music very often, bhut when it is bought it is mainly though downloads offline thorough most likeley Itunes. This is not what we wanted, but what we expected considering the age of our audience.
Question 6 tells us that the most popular ways to listne to music is through the internet using sites such as YouTube and using personal music players such as MP3's and Ipods. This will mean when it comes to our marketing, we are most likely to use the internet to market and advertise to our audience.
Question 7 askes weather or not our audiece listens to Indie music,  the outcome was arround a 60% / 40% split. the majority being yes. This tells us there is a large market for indie music and people do enjoy the genre.
Next we asked our audience what kind of music video they preffered. The winning choice was Narrative, meaning we will probably construct a narrative storyboard to follow this demand.
Lastly, we asked our audience if the enjoyed watching music videos, the majority voted yes and gave reasons such as enjoyable to watch, they like seeing the artist and the fact it gives another way to enjoy music.
this is what we have learnt about our audience and what the like and dislike. This will hopefully help us when we come to constucting our final product and making a product that will deffinatly appeal to our audience.

Post 14: About our audience

In order to know more about our audience, we created a questionnaire and asked 10 males and 10 females on their musical preferences and through this we can decide which would be the best way to market our product to our target audience. Here is an image of our questionnaire.

After giving  our questionnaire to 20 people (10 male and 10 female) I put the data into pie charts to reflect the audience response for each question.
Alos, most answers had more than one option selectd.
Question one was what gender are you. as astated above, the questionnaire was given to 10 males and 10 females.
Question 2. What kind of music do you mostly listen to. here is the bar chart to show our results.

This Car chart shows that our prediction of the average listender would probably be female and shows that the common trend of a female fans is accurate.
Question 3. How old are you?

This chart shows that the reader profile was correct in assuming that the acerage fan would probably still be in Education.

Question 4: How often do you buy music?

This chart shows how often our audience buys music.

Question 5: Where do you buy your music from?

This shows us how are audience consume music and how we can market it effectivly to our target audience

Question 6. How do you listen to your music.

This chart shows us that the most effective way to market our music product to the consumer is to use the internet. seccondly, the most popular choice was the use of an Ipod to listen to music. this tells us that the best way to market our product to the target audeice would be to use the internet and to market in a way that would be accessable to Ipod users.

Question 7: Do you listen to indie music
This is a bar chart to help on roughly how many people will enjoy listening to our music.

Question 8. What kind of music video do you prefer?
This bar chart shows us what type of music videos our audience prefer to watch. It will help us so we will know how to cinstruct iur video.

Question 9:Do you like watching music videos?

Post 13: commercial audience?

To decide weather or not the Indie/ pop genre has a commercial audience, I will draw evidence form  the current charts to see what is currently trending. look at album slaes from some of the well known artists from within the genre such as Florence and the Machine, The Script and one or two smaller artists like Bon Iver.

This is a screen shot of this week (Monday 17th October) current top 20 songs in the charts. Former number 1 spot holder Ed Sheean is a fantastic example that there is the market available for the Indie pop genre. he has a 19 week streak in the charts and has moved back up 4 places to 9th in the charts this week.
Also, Artist James Morrison who is at position 15 currently also demonstrates that the public do enjoy buying and downloading Indie pop.

Looking at individual sales records for some of the biggest names in indie pop will also give us a good indication of how popular Indie/Pop really is. The script in 2008 sold 1.8 million copies of their self titled album 'The Script' . From this album, the single, 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved'  went straight to number one in both the UK and Irish charts
Similarly, Florence and the machine with her album 'Lungs' spent 33 weeks inside the top 10 downloads and peaked at number 1 for two weeks. Also making its debut at number 2 in the UK charts.
In Ireland,  the album whent 4x platinum,  aslo in the UK. US the album went platinum. In the rest of Europe, the album reached Platinum also. This shows that there is a avaliable market for the Indie pop genre.

Post 12: Target audience

To define our  target audience, we will need to use Demographic and Psychographic profiling in order to create an accurate reader profile of who would probably be a viewer of our final finished product. to do this, we will have to use G.R.A.S
G- gender
A- age
R- race
S- Socio- economic status.
In order to accurately determine who our target audience are, we will create a generalized reader profile at the end of this post to show who we believe would be an accurate representation of someone who might listen to indie/pop music.

Demographic Profile.

By splitting up the population into separate groups, it makes it easier to then target specific audiences.  Therefore the following gruops will be what we split our audience market up into to decide who we will be aiming our product at:
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Sexuality
  • Class
  • Geographical Area
  • Religion
  • Economics

Below is the breakdown for the G.R.A.S which is the most commonly used method of identifying a target audience
Gender-  From our previous research, we have come to the conclusion that the most likely gender to listen to indie pop musicis likely to be female. We have come to this conclusion simply because of the nature of Indie pop music being for the large part mostly expressve about feelings and emotions, we belive this to be qute a feminine quality, and would expect that females would relate to this more so than males. Altough Indie pop music has also a large male fan base.

Age-  the average age of a listener for Indie pop music will probably be teens to young adult. This is more likely to be as the artists themselves for this genre are around a similar age, therefore, the fans will relate better to someone theire own age. Also towards someone who sings about personal emotions and thoughts that the fans of the genre will also find common groud with and will then likely to be a supporter of the artists work.
Although the most likely age group to listen to this genre of music will probably be 16-25 year olds, this does not rule out older fans more around the ages of 30-mid 40's as i personaly know people this age who do enjoy music from artists such as The Scrip, Paloma Faith and Ed Sheeran.

Race- The most likely race to listen to Indie pop music are White people. This again does not rule out any other race, it is simply white people who according statistics buy and listen to most of the Indie pop music. This could be explained through racial and ethnic backgrounds and the different cultures. for example, people from a Bangladeshi background are more likely to listen to Bolly-wood styles of music than conventional western pop music.

Socio-economic status- Typically, this is broken down into High, Middle and Low Socioeconomic status. For our target audience, it is likely that our fans will fit into the bottom half of the middle and the lower end of the socioeconomic status. This will probably be down to the fact that the artists themselves are from the lower end of the scale, and as previously discussed, the fans relate well to the artists who are like them in many aspects, this is a key aspect as to why they are likely to be a fan of the indie pop music because the music is 'Real' and relates to everyday problems, thoughts and feelings.

Pshycographic profiling
To further specify or target audience, i will look at psychographic profiling.  this is another way of further dividing up the population in order to more specifically target a group of people. Each person will fit onto one of the following economic groups:

  •  A (upper class) - higher managerial, administrative or proffessional eg:- surgeon or company director.
  • B ( middle class) - Intermediate managerial, administrative or proffessional eg:- teachers, solicitors.
  • C1 (lower middle class) - Skilled non manual eg:- sales assistant, shop floor supervisors
  • C2 (skilled working class) - Skilled manual work eg:- pluber, electrician
  • D (lower working class) - Semi skilled eg:- assembly line workers, cleaners
  • E (subsidence)- Unskilled, pensioners and unemployed

Our target audience, taking into consideration the most likely age of them (16-25 years old) will probably still in education or job seeking. therefore this means they will likely to be falling into categories C2, D and E.
Through Young and Rubicams Cross Cultural Consumer Characteristics we can further split the audience up into 4 groups based on their aspirations.
Mainstreamers: These people are likely to 'follow the crowd'. They take comfort from buying form well known branded names this is the largest and therefore most easily targeted part of the market.
Aspirers: These people are driven buy their status. They are likely to buy the latest gadgets, have the best electronics and smart fashion goods. this is a smaller section of the market, but still a large portion
Succeeders: These people are already at the top of the success ladder ad crave control over what they already have. For example. adverts for things such as cars, which emphasise power are directly aimed at this group.
Reformers.: These people want the world to be a better place. They are often well educated people, such as teachers or doctors. They are also likely to buy eco-friendly products that will help the world. E.g fair trade coffee
The Individuals:  This group of people respond best to adverts that promote quirkiness and individuality. this group was developed in the 1980's and 90's and the niche audience was a new area to target. this is the smallest area to target, however, this group of people are more likely to remain faithful to a brand rather than chop and change between what's current like the mainstreamers.

We would be marketing our product to The Individuals. as our style is Indie/pop  and this would be the best group to target as they would like our product.

Finally, another way to effectively market is buy using Maslow's hierarchy of needs. By finding out which groups people fit into, we can use this pyramid to manipulate the audience into feeling they need to buy a product in order to feel better about themselves. By using and abusing human psychology, it is easy to make a person feel as though they need something in order to improve their self worth.
For example, our average listener to indie pop would probably be a mid-late teenage girl, who is in education, lives in rural england and possibly has a part time job. Because she would probably have not a great deal of spare cash buy making her feel as though this product will help her achieve self actualization, she is more likely to buy it. If she is unemployed, then by buying this product, it may make her feel more socially acceptable, and therefore this alone could be enough to sell the product.

Trhough looking at Demographic and Psychographic profiling, we have ome to the conclusion that our average reader will probably be:
Female
In education.
Late teens/ early 20's
Part time job
Lives in a small town or village in the countryside
Comes from a background without too much money.

This is who we believe is the most likely listener to the Indie/pop music genre.

Post 11: 2nd ancillary task

Our second ancillary task will be to create some posters to help advertise our artist and an advert in a magazine.
In this post we will be using some examples of posters and magazine adverts of others artists from the same music genre such as: The fray, Ed Sheeran, Plan B and Verve. We will also be getting posters and magazine adverts from our artists- The Script to we can take ideas from them.

Album Covers- The Fray

Ed Sheeran- Album cover

This is a magazine advertisement for Plan B

it show us the picture of the artist (Plan B) along with the title of the artist and the title of the album.
These 2 titles are in a bold font to attract the audiences attention immediately in oder to make them look at the advertisement and buy the album. It has a list of the newspapers which have reviewed this album and rated it. (notice how all newspapers have rated the same 4 stars) This advertisement also includes a sub heading "The multi-platinum album of the year" to help promote the artist even more.

This is a poster advertisement from the band- Verve. This poster includes the name of the band/artist and the name of the album. It tell us when the album is released and some information to help sell the album.
